He was a postdoctoral research fellow at Rice University, Houston, TX, USA, 1997 – 2002 (including a NASA/SAO Chandra fellowship 1999 – 2002), before joining the faculty of Ohio University, Athens, OH, USA, in 2002, first as assistant professor, then (2007) as associate professor, and (2012) full professor. In 2013, he moved to South Africa to join the Centre for Space Research at NWU as SARChI Chair of Astrophysics and Space Physics. He is an internationally renowned expert on the physics of astronomical sources of high-energy (X-ray and gamma-ray) radiation. These include black holes in our Galaxy an in the centres of other galaxies, called active galactic nuclei, and gamma-ray bursts. His group is very actively involved in the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) near Windhoek, Namibia, which is the world’s most sensitive ground-based gamma-ray observatory. Markus Boettcher is the chairperson of the South African Gamma-Ray Astronomy Programme (SA-GAMMA), which co-ordinates the research activities and funding needs for about 100 members (permanent researchers, postdocs, students) at 6 institutions in South Africa and Namibia. In particular, SA-GAMMA co-ordinates the South African involvement in H.E.S.S. and the next-generation ground-based gamma-ray observatory, the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), currently under construction on the Canary Island of La Palma, Spain, and near Mt. Paranal, Chile.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-orcid field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8434-5692">https://orcid.org/0000-0002-8434-5692</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-visit-fsd field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Visit</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1433" hreflang="en">Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-physical-address field--type-text-long field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Physical Address</div> <div class="field--item"><p>Potch campus, G5, 216</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telephone-number field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Telephone Number</div> <div class="field--item"> 018 299 2418 </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-cellphone field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Cellphone Number</div> <div class="field--item">076 997 1109 </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-mail-main field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">E-mail</div> <div class="field--item">Markus.Bottcher@nwu.ac.za</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/news.nwu.ac.za/files/files/experts/Markus.png" width="820" height="861" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo-caption field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof Markus Boettcher</div> Fri, 01 Dec 2023 12:36:45 +0000 BELINDA BANTHAM 29560 at https://news.nwu.ac.za Amare Abebe https://news.nwu.ac.za/expert/amare-abebe <span>Amare Abebe</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/32504" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">BELINDA BANTHAM</span></span> <span>Fri, 12/01/2023 - 14:19</span> <div class="field field--name-field-field-of-expertise field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/2258" hreflang="en">Cosmology, Gravitation, Astrophysics, Astronomy, Dark Matter and Dark Energy</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person-s-title field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof</div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-title field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item">Professor</div> <div class="field field--name-field-name-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Amare</div> <div class="field field--name-field-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Abebe</div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-from field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts from</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1240" hreflang="en">Faculty of Natural and Agricultural Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>After completing his postgraduate training specialising in gravitation and cosmology at UCT, Amare Abebe joined the NWU as a postdoctoral research fellow in 2014 and has remained here ever since, where he is now a professor of physics and the current director of the Centre for Space Research (CSR). His research focuses on understanding the origin and evolution of the universe - and the formation of large-scale structure, i.e., structures larger than individual galaxies, in it – using alternative theories of gravitational physics and observational constraints from astronomical data. Part of this endeavour is to explain (away) dark matter and dark energy, two components of matter and energy that, together, account for nearly 95% of the total content of the universe despite being invisible - hence simply referred to as dark – but whose existence is inferred through their gravitational and cosmological effects.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-url-google-scholar field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="https://scholar.google.co.za/citations?user=uhBv63gAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;authuser=1">https://scholar.google.co.za/citations?user=uhBv63gAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;authuser=1</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-orcid field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5475-2919">https://orcid.org/0000-0001-5475-2919</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-physical-address field--type-text-long field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Physical Address</div> <div class="field--item"><p>Potchefstroom Campus, G5-117</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telephone-number field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Telephone Number</div> <div class="field--item">+27-18-389-2848 </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-cellphone field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Cellphone Number</div> <div class="field--item">+27-84-974-2255 </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-mail-main field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">E-mail</div> <div class="field--item">AmareAbebe.Gidelew@nwu.ac.za</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/news.nwu.ac.za/files/files/experts/amare%281%29.png" width="908" height="707" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo-caption field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item"> Amare Abebe</div> Fri, 01 Dec 2023 12:19:40 +0000 BELINDA BANTHAM 29559 at https://news.nwu.ac.za Elize S van Eeden https://news.nwu.ac.za/expert/elize-s-van-eeden <span>Elize S van Eeden</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/32504" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">BELINDA BANTHAM</span></span> <span>Mon, 10/31/2022 - 15:39</span> <div class="field field--name-field-field-of-expertise field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1765" hreflang="en">Historical linguistics</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person-s-title field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof</div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-title field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item">Professor</div> <div class="field field--name-field-name-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Elize</div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-role field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Deputy Director</div> <div class="field field--name-field-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">van Eeden</div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-from field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts from</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1220" hreflang="en">School of Social Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>In my personal career development I became a regional history expert.mAfter my postgraduate work, my research in regional history gradually matured towards four central foci. Initially, I focused on (i) Gold mining as the region’s economic driver and (ii) Local economic developments and related environmental distortions. Once I had a more comprehensive multidisciplinary understanding of the FWR and regional histories as field, I (iii) advanced the methodological paradigm for doing regional and micro (local) histories, as well as the historiography of regional history in South Africa (SA). As last central focus to contribute to regional histories I continued to develop my methodology, always keeping region/space central, to be more theme and sometimes phenomenon-specific. This culminated into research on (iv) ecohealth and wellbeing matters in communities living in mining areas. In this regard I successfully led a National Research Foundation (NRF) project, complementing an integrative multidisciplinary model in mining related community engagement research (2013 to 2017). As a result of collaboration with Finnish regional and rural studies historians at the Ruralia Institute of Helsinki, I also imported an ethnographic research model in which some affective emotional history features were included. In this model the ecohealth and wellbeing of the FWR region were explored through a form of homeliness research. This project was the first of its kind in SA. Though my major regional/spatial emphasis of research remains the FWR, I have in the past years (prior to 2013 and beyond) engaged in regional history specific research projects related to</p> <p>places in the Eastern Cape, Southern Cape, Free State, North West Province, KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng.</p> <p>Since 1986 I held leadership positions in several scholarly societies: the presidency of the American Studies Association of SA (1994-1998); secretariat (1994-2008) and chairperson (2009-2017) of the SA Society for History Teaching; Executive Board member of the International Society for History Didactics (2014-2021); member of the South African Historical Society; South African Historical Association (SAHA), and the South African Society for Cultural History (a Board member). I co-edited the H-Safrica International-Internet network (1997-2002); I was Editor-in-Chief of the “Yesterday&amp;Today” journal (2005-2014) which achieved DHET accreditation under my editorship in 2012; I also launched its website in 2005. I served on the executive of the SAHA as well as the editorial board of the accredited journal, “Historia” (1997-2007). Currently, I am editor-in chief of the DHET-approved journal: “New Contree” (2008-2022). This journals serves regional history research.</p> <p>I have received career acknowledgement, including awards for excellence in higher education teaching and learning (1995, 1998, 2019); the award for Researcher of the Year at the Vaal Triangle Campus (2009) where I was ranked among the top researchers of the NWU. I acted as Editor/co-editor/chapter author of 30 books and more than 85 scholarly articles. I am annually recognised by my peers and academic management as a top performer. I was the chairperson of History at the Vanderbijlpark Campus (2012-2018) at the NWU, and is currently Deputy Director for the School of Social Science (serving on many school and faculty related committees). I am also project leader of the Northwest (NW) Regional and Local History Studies research group in the NWU Focus Area Social Transformation. In this regard I serve on a Committee for Advance Degrees (CAD) and an Ethics Committee (2013-2021). Personally I have delivered more than a dozen post graduates (PhD’s and MA’s).</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-visit-fsd field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Visit</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1417" hreflang="en">Faculty of Humanities</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-media field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other Media</div> <div class="field--item"><p><a href="http://elizevaneeden.co.za/">http://elizevaneeden.co.za/</a></p> <p><a href="http://library.nwu.ac.za/node/43604">http://library.nwu.ac.za/node/43604</a></p> <p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/elize-van-eeden-5968a88">https://www.linkedin.com/in/elize-van-eeden-5968a88</a></p> <p>ORCID no: 0000-0002-4852-5522</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-linkedin field--type-link field--label-hidden field--item"><a href="/pub/dir/Elize/Van%2BEeden">/pub/dir/Elize/Van%2BEeden</a></div> <div class="field field--name-field-physical-address field--type-text-long field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Physical Address</div> <div class="field--item"><p>NWU Vanderbijlpark Campus, Vanderbijlpark, Building 16, Room 29.</p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telephone-number field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Telephone Number</div> <div class="field--item">016 910 3469</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-cellphone field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Cellphone Number</div> <div class="field--item">0927528839</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-mail-main field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">E-mail</div> <div class="field--item">Elize.vanEeden@nwu.ac.za</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/news.nwu.ac.za/files/files/experts/Elize%20van%20Eeden%20%202%20...%20Chilli%20PicNic%20083%20744%207711%20.jpg" width="300" height="449" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo-caption field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Elize S van Eeden</div> Mon, 31 Oct 2022 13:39:12 +0000 BELINDA BANTHAM 28602 at https://news.nwu.ac.za Prof Phil van Schalkwyk https://news.nwu.ac.za/expert/prof-phil-van-schalkwyk <span>Prof Phil van Schalkwyk</span> <span><span lang="" about="/user/32504" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">BELINDA BANTHAM</span></span> <span>Mon, 10/31/2022 - 14:36</span> <div class="field field--name-field-field-of-expertise field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--items"> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1781" hreflang="en">Afrikaans</a></div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1696" hreflang="en">Literature</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-person-s-title field--type-list-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof</div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-title field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field--item">Professor</div> <div class="field field--name-field-name-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Phil </div> <div class="field field--name-field-job-role field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Research Director</div> <div class="field field--name-field-surname field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">van Schalkwyk</div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-from field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts from</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1321" hreflang="en">School of Languages</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field--item"><p>Phil van Schalkwyk completed an MA in Afrikaans and Dutch Literature, Cum Laude, at the PU for CHE. My research interest is in the facilitation of resilience, and in successful adaptation to / optimal performance within any context that poses challenges in terms of the maintenance of one’s psychological well-being. I am especially interested in the utilization of so-called nature-assisted, or adventure interventions in bringing about these positive changes through experiential learning. Nature is both utilized as a rich therapeutic context, and acknowledged as a co-therapist in bringing about positive change in the lives of participants / clients. Although this is effective in both individual and group settings, I am especially interested in the latter. I teach group therapy and –dynamics at the Master’s level, and have acquired some experience in using this therapeutic modality in my research and clinical work.   </span></span></span></p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-experts-in field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other experts in</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1588" hreflang="en">Health</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-visit-fsd field--type-entity-reference field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Visit</div> <div class="field--item"><a href="/taxonomy/term/1431" hreflang="en">Faculty of Health Sciences</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-other-media field--type-text-long field--label-above"> <div class="field--label">Other Media</div> <div class="field--item"><p style="margin-left:48px; text-indent:-36.0pt; margin-bottom:13px"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif"><a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Johan-Potgieter-5" style="color:blue; text-decoration:underline">https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Johan-Potgieter-5</a></span></span></span></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-physical-address field--type-text-long field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Physical Address</div> <div class="field--item"><p style="margin-bottom:13px"><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="line-height:115%"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Potchefstroom Campus, Building E8, Office # 123</span></span></span></p> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-telephone-number field--type-string field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">Telephone Number</div> <div class="field--item">018 299 1731</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-e-mail-main field--type-email field--label-inline"> <div class="field--label">E-mail</div> <div class="field--item">johan.potgieter@nwu.ac.za</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field--item"> <img src="/sites/news.nwu.ac.za/files/files/experts/Prof.%20J%20potgieter.JPG" width="424" height="640" alt="" typeof="foaf:Image" class="img-responsive" /> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-photo-caption field--type-string field--label-hidden field--item">Prof J Potgieter</div> Fri, 18 Jun 2021 10:38:25 +0000 BELINDA BANTHAM 27407 at https://news.nwu.ac.za
