Prof Le Roux is an Associate Professor in the field of Human Physiology, appointed at the North-West University since February 2014. She teaches and supervises undergraduate and postgraduate students and performs research as part of the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART) at the South African Medical Research Council: Unit for Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease at the North-West University.

Prof Le Roux completed her BSc degree in Biological Sciences in 2009, BSc Hons in Physiology in 2010, MSc in Physiology in 2011 and PhD in Physiology in May 2015. Her PhD thesis focussed on the association of vascular inflammation with lifestyle and cardiometabolic risk factors, which may play a role in the development of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, and whether inflammation can predict cardiovascular mortality among the black South African population, already double burdened by a high prevalence of hypertension and HIV. In 2016, Prof Le Roux visited the British Heart Foundation Cardiovascular Research Centre at Glasgow University, Scotland as a post-doctoral research fellow where she investigated the effect of the Glasgow and Clyde Weight Management Service programme (2003-2015) on the cardiometabolic profile of more than 4000 diabetic patients.

As an emerging researcher, Prof Le Roux conducts research in several research studies, including the African-PREDICT study, PURE-SA study, SABPA study, ExAMIN Youth SA study and EndoAfrica study (of which she is the principal investigator). She is trained to perform several cardiovascular measurements and statistical analyses. She obtained National Research Foundation (NRF) rating in the Y2 category in November 2020 and received the Teaching Excellence Award in February 2021. Prof Yolandi Breet is an associate professor and researcher in the field of Cardiovascular physiology and is also the subject leader of Physiology. Her research focuses on factors leading to the development of hypertension and cardiovascular disease. Her specific interests include large artery stiffness and early vascular aging. She holds a Y-rating from the National Research Foundation (NRF) and is also a member of the Association for Research into Arterial Structure and Physiology, Sub-Saharan Africa Interprofessional Education Network (AfrIPEN), the Golden Key International Honour Society and serves on the Southern African Association of Health Educationalists (SAAHE) Northern Region Executive Committee.

Alta (Aletta E.) Schutte is Professor of Physiology, and funded by the Department of Science and Technology as the South African Research Chair (SARChI) in the Early Detection and Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease in South Africa – hosted by the Hypertension in Africa Research Team (HART) at the North-West University. She is also the Unit Director of Medical Research Council Extramural Unit for Hypertension and Cardiovascular Disease.

The research focus of HART is the identification of early markers for the development of hypertension, and ultimately the prevention of cardiovascular disease in the black South African population. She has published over 250 papers on the topic of hypertension, and supervised over 85 postgraduate students. She has been acknowledged for her work as the winner of the Distinguished Woman Scientist in the Natural, Engineering and Life Sciences award, presented by the South African Department of Science and Technology in 2017; the NSTF South 32 TW Kambule Award (2016/2017); the British Association Medal from the Southern Africa Association for the Advancement of Science (S2A3). She was also the recipient of the Meiring Naude Medal from the Royal Society of South Africa, the AU-TWAS (African Union & The World Academy of Sciences) Award, and the 2018 African Union Kwame Nkrumah Regional Award for Scientific Excellence.

She serves as Editor of the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology and on the Editorial Board of established cardiovascular journals, such as Hypertension, the Journal of Hypertension, Journal of Clinical Hypertension, Journal of Human Hypertension, Current Hypertension Reports and Current Obesity Reports. She is one of 20 founding members of the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS); Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and the Royal Society of South Africa; the Past President of the Southern African Hypertension Society (SAHS); and President of the International Society of Hypertension (ISH).

Prof HW Huisman performs his research in the field of cardiovascular physiology, especially on factors related to changes in vascular structure and function in the development of hypertension. Although the research is mainly done in low socio-economic communities of South Africa this work also contributes to the existing body of knowledge regarding vascular dysfunction, arterial stiffness and early vascular aging. This also implicates the influence of vascular peptides, hormones, enzymes, oxidative stress, inflammation and other markers associated with cardiovascular disease under different circumstances like obesity, urbanization and aging.
