This year, Desiré Botha, Head of Learning for Governance & Assurance and Legal at Standard Bank in Johannesburg, received four awards for best achievement in several subjects and was also named best MBA student over the three-year term by the NWU Potchefstroom Business School. All together, she received 15 distinctions during her three-year MBA studies. For this achievement, the sought-after Old Mutual gold medal was awarded to her during the graduate dinner.
In 2010, Desiré registered for her Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the Potchefstroom Business School of the North-West University, and on 21 May this year, she obtained her MBA degree. Awards for best achievement in the different subjects were also awarded to graduates during the graduate dinner. The silver medal, with a cash prize, was awarded to Mr Renico Koen (software developer at Nanoteq in Centurion) for the best mini-dissertation in the final year. His study leader was Mr Johan Coetzee, lecturer in Information management for the MBA programme.
Desiré joined Standard Bank straight after school. She fulfilled various positions in the branch network for 10 years, which included back-office and front-line positions. She was also sent to university (RAU) as part of the full-time university scheme (with full pay) during 1995 and 1996 and completed her BCom Financial Management degree. Her last position in the business was a relationship manager at one of the Commercial suites, after which time she joined the learning and development department, being responsible for the design, development and facilitation of training material. She had been in the learning and development department for the past 14 years, fulfilling various positions.
On 1 September 2012, Desiré was appointed as Head of Learning for Governance and Assurance and Legal. She is based in Johannesburg, and is currently responsible for the development of a learning architecture for Compliance for the organisation across 16 African and 14 International countries. Furthermore, she is responsible for establishing learning solutions for the Governance and Assurance and Legal areas of the bank, globally. “Standard Bank is such a dynamic organisation and has so much to offer in a variety of positions”.
Applying my MBA in my work and what the MBA has meant for me:
According to Desiré, the MBA has given her a depth of knowledge across a wide variety of disciplines. “Of particular value to me was the integration of an array of subjects that provides me with credibility in dealing with senior executives at the Bank. Furthermore, it has allowed me to apply broader-thinking skills that surpass mere theory and look at the practicality of solutions in the workplace. The practical applications by way of case studies during the MBA made this possible”.
Desiré has been married to Sias Botha for the past 21 years. They enjoy travelling and are ardent campers. Sias is a Fire Risk Management Officer at the West Rand District Municipality. “Without his dedication, support and love I would not have been able to complete my MBA”. They have three lovely children.
