NWU Mafikeng Campus appoints two extra-ordinary professors in the Faculty of Law
North-West University, Mafikeng Campus’s Faculty of Law has appointed two extra-ordinary professors for a period of three years. They are Prof Omphemetse Sibanda and Prof Thandabantu Nhlapo.
These two professors will be involved in the training of undergraduates and postgraduates in the Faculty of Law as well as the evaluation or assessment of students.
“We have recommended the appointment of these two extra-ordinary professors for strategic reasons, in particular to increase the pool of senior staff members to supervise students in new areas like Corporate Law, International Economic Law and Private Law,” said Prof Melvin Mbao, dean of the faculty.
Prof Sibanda is a director at the University of South Africa (UNISA) College Of Law. He obtained his LLD from the Mafikeng Campus. He has done outstanding work in terms of research and extensive community engagement in the North-West Province.
Prof Nhlapo is an outstanding scholar in Customary Law and a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Cape Town. From 2004-2008 Prof Nhlapo was appointed by President Mbeki to chair the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims arising in the traditional leadership sector. Previously he also held the positions of Deputy Chief of Mission and Deputy Ambassador at the embassy of South Africa in Washington DC (USA).
“Prof Nhlapo is now retired, but he has expressed the willingness to help us. We are looking forward to tap into the huge experience and depth of scholarship of the two professors,” said Prof Mbao.
