Mafikeng Campus opens the windows to the universe
The Department of Physics on the Mafikeng Campus of the North-West University (NWU) has recently obtained a new telescope that will open the windows to the universe. The telescope will be used for astronomy outreach projects for learners, students and the community at large.
This new telescope is an addition to the state of the art telescope which was unveiled in August 2015 called the Mahikeng Astronomical Observatory (MAO) located on the grounds of the Mafikeng Campus.
The department aims to conduct monthly events and as the telescope is portable it can be easily erected at schools, malls and plazas for the public and children to observe the planets and other celestial objects in the sky. According to Dr Bruno Letarte, one of the astrophysics lecturers, they have a team of keen students and lecturers who will be participating in these events.
The purpose of the telescope is to generate interest in young aspiring scientists and learners to pursue careers in the fields of astronomy. Through this initiative the department will maintain and increase their research activity and at the same time sustain their relevance to the various communities they serve.
