First full-time brass lecturer at NWU School of Music

The NWU School of Music recently expanded its under and postgraduate music programmes to also include instruction in all brass instruments. Ms Yvonne-Marié Brand has been appointed from the second semester of this year as the first full-time brass lecturer to establish and build brass instrument training at the School of Music. The NWU Wind Ensemble and Brass Quintet will also be under her direction. Performers of trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba and French horn therefore now have the opportunity to continue their music studies in Potchefstroom.

Ms Brand completed her undergraduate music degrees at the University of the Free State and proceeded to the University of Cape Town where she finished her Master's degree in trumpet. She was a finalist in the major music competitions in the country, was selected as the principal trumpet player of the National Youth Orchestra for several years, and regularly performs with other symphony orchestras across South Africa and Namibia.

She is very passionate about music development programmes and will continue with her work and research in that area. Having also completed her MBA from the University of Cape Town in 2011, she will emphasize the necessity to train music students in certain business skills so that they are able to manage and advance their music careers themselves. When not busy with music, she enjoys spending some time on the golf course.
