Extraordinary professor honoured in a special way
Various theologians of the North-West University (NWU) took part in a special conference during which one of its extraordinary professors in the New Testament was honoured with a Festschrift. Prof Jan du Rand received the special edition of In die Skriflig/In Luce Verbi on his 70th birthday as Festschrift in which many of his colleagues and former students made contributions during the past years.
The event was celebrated with researchers contributing articles to the Festschrift and presenting their contributions as papers.
One of these researchers, Prof Fika Janse van Rensburg, described Prof Du Rand’s contribution as a life-long academic love affair with the New Testament scriptures according to John. “He has a heritage that inspires, both in the form of his own publications and in the persons of his delivered doctorate students,” wrote Prof Van Rensburg.
Prof Du Rand studied at the University of Pretoria and obtained a BA degree, a BA Hons degree in Greek and a BD in Theology. He was a minister in the NG Church in Krokodilrivier for three years and then returned to the Faculty of Theology at UP in 1976. He completed his doctoral studies, and in 1980 he left for the University of the Orange Free State. Nine years later he was appointed as a professor in the New Testament at the former RAU, and he accepted his extraordinary professorship at the NWU after he retired (from UJ) in 2009.
