I live with my wife Sheila in Potchefstroom where I am currently employed as a Professor of Mathematics at the Potchefstroom campus of NWU. Apart from Mathematics my interests include road-running and theology.
My research focuses on the theory of C*- and von Neumann algebras as a formalism for modelling noncommutative (quantum) phenomena. In particular together with my collaborators I wish to refine and develop the theory of noncommutative function spaces for general von Neumann algebras, and then also to study the behaviour of classes of important operators on the spaces thus constructed. Whilst there is by now a well-developed theory of for example noncommutative function spaces for type I and II von Neumann algebras, the situation as far as type III algebras are concerned is far less satisfactory.
Specifically I on the one hand study the theory and applications of noncommutative Hardy spaces, and on the other the behaviour and properties of noncommutative Orlicz spaces. Noncommutative Hardy spaces provide an appropriate framework for noncommutative Harmonic analysis, whereas there is renewed interest in Orlicz spaces as a formalism for modelling quantum mechanics.
