Prof Alida Herbst is a registered social worker and currently the Director of the School of Psychosocial Behavioural Sciences at the Potchefstroom Campus of the NWU. She practised for about 13 years as medical social worker in, amongst others, 1 Military Hospital and the MediClinic Pretoria Heart and Kloof Hospitals.
She particularly gained experience in terms of trauma and loss counselling, bereavement counselling and the psychosocial adjustment of patients with cancer and/or heart diseases.
Her master’s degree studies in Social Work in Play Therapy at the UP dealt with the influence of military separation on the child, and during her PhD studies at the former PU for CHE she developed a group-work programme based on the life map technique to support young adults with HIV.
She has been involved with the NWU’s Potchefstroom Campus since 2005 and taught social work at undergraduate and postgraduate level with specific focus on social work management, substance dependence and social work in health.
Her research focus is the psychosocial health of individuals, groups and communities.
