Centre for Applied Risk Management reaches momentous milestone

Two years after the inception of the Centre for Applied Risk Management (UARM)’s part-time master’s degree – a first of its kind within the South African higher education realm, the first cohort of graduates walked the stage during the autumn graduation ceremony of the Vaal Triangle Campus of the North-West University (NWU Vaal).

The seven graduates are:

  • Bheki Gutshwa
  • Chan Naidoo (with distinction)
  • GS Naidoo (with distinction)
  • Johan Grobbelaar (with distinction)
  • Leanne Williams
  • Vaneshree Pillay (with distinction)
  • Wandile Mazula

These seven graduates (of which four graduated with distinction) also took centre stage during the first graduate symposium for Applied Risk Management that was held at the Institute of Risk Management South Africa (IRMSA) in Sandton recently. During the symposium the graduates shared their experiences of the past two years with industry leaders, experts and prospective postgraduate students. Johan Grobbelaar won the award for the top student in the programme and Chan Naidoo won the best presentation of the day award.

More about UARM

The Masters in Applied Risk Management programme is aimed at the needs of full-time employees at organisations across the private and public sector. According to Prof Hermien Zaaiman, Manager and Associate Professor at UARM, adult education works best in an interactive, facilitative learning environment and as such the Centre allows students to contribute and learn from guest lecturers, professional experts and from each other based on their own work experiences. “Our qualitative approach to risk management fills the gap created by the current dominance of quantitative risk programmes in higher education and we are in the privileged position to leverage off strong working relationships with leading experts, academic institutions and risk organisations locally and internationally,” says Prof Zaaiman.

IRMSA accreditation

UARM enjoys IRMSA-accreditation and has been awarded several high-level accolades for its contribution towards the development of risk management training within the South African higher education sector. For example, the Centre received the prestigious IRMSA Industry Initiative Award within the much contested Education Category during the 2015 IRMSA Annual Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The award was accompanied by the following motivation: “In recognition of the screening of the film Boom Bust Boom to the public as part of the Behavioural Risk Management module within the Centre’s master’s programme in Applied Risk Management. This together with UARM’s unique and industry inclusive approach to the teaching of risk management is hereby acknowledged by this award.”  In 2013 IRMSA awarded two Industry Specific Risk Initiative Awards to the Centre. The first award was awarded in the Education Category, followed by the overall Industry Specific Risk Initiative Special Award for Recognition of Exceptional Service.

* IRMSA is recognised by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), as the only professional body for Risk Managers in Southern Africa.
